Thoughts on the Recall – Part One
I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of things to say about this recall. Rather than bore you with a bunch of little posts, I’m just going to lump them all up here :
Stop with the puns already
If I hear one more pun about Arnold Schwarzenegger becoming “The Running Man” in California’s “Total Recall” so he can muscle into the governor’s mansion and pump-up Sacramento, I’m going to scream. Maybe if Gray Davis was being recalled for being too funny, then this would be appropriate.
What the hell is he talking about?
On CNN the morning, Gary Coleman was describing himself as a “protest candidate” but then reminding people that he’s in favor of the recall and will be voting for Arnold. Huh?? If he’s in favor of ousting Davis, then what is he protesting? The fact that he doesn’t have a career anymore?
I hope he’s still crying
TBogg’s got a brilliant response to Darrell Issa’s crybaby act from yesterday :
- I look at this picture that Hesiod has up of Darrel Issa crying for the media and it makes me wonder if he feels the same way that John Hinkley must have felt after he tried to impress Jodie Foster by shooting Ronald Reagan, only to find out afterwards that she’s gay.
I bet it feels a lot like that.
Skeletons in Arnie’s closet?
It’ll be interesting to see how much dirt comes out in the upcoming campaign to smear Arnold Schwarzenegger. I’ve read in a few places that the National Enquirer has been sitting on a bunch of embarrassing stuff for a while now, but has been holding out because he’s got a reputation for being litigious. Apparently now that he’s running for office, he’s “fair game”. Of the embarrassing things I’ve heard so far is that Faux News has been running footage of him getting high, that he has a tendency to grope women who aren’t his wife, and that his dad was a Nazi. I hope the whole Nazi thing fades away fast. Chastising him for something his father did is pretty ridiculous (he is from Austria after all). For the rest of it, I dunno how relevant any of it is to his ability to run our state, but it’ll be fun to watch nonetheless.
Dismissing all cases at once?
Unfortunately, the California Supreme court dismissed all five cases that were challenging the recall yesterday. Is it safe to assume that these decisions were probably made in the name of political expediency rather than any legal basis? Shouldn’t Supreme Court Justices be resonable enough to make descisions based not on arbitrary timelines, but rather on the legal validity of those claims? By dismissing all five at once, it’s really hard to believe that the justices took any of these claims seriously.

Correct on not holding the sins of the father against the candidate, but Arnold actively supported Waldheim (member of the Wehrmacht) in his campaign for the Austrian presidency and has never repudiated the man publicly.

This seems like a damned-if-you-do/damned-if-you-don’t sort of situation. Can you imagine the outcry had the Supreme Court intervened on behalf of the governor? Imagine the same outcry as you had in the 2000 election, but trumpted 24 hours a day on Fox News

Yeah, this is America, after all — nobody’s election would be based on something their dad did!
Ya gotta wonder, though, if Gray Davis’s dad had been a Klansman or Communist or something, would we be hearing about it in the recall?
