The Right vs. The Left

Right Wing News has compiled two lists of “Worst Figures In American History” as determined by right-wing and left-wing blogs. The introductions to both lists begin “Out of all the gangsters, serial killers, mass murders, incompetent & crooked politicians, spies, traitors, and ultra left-wing kooks in all of American history…”, so you can be sure that both these lists should be taken with a giant grain of salt. After all, they were compiled by political junkies. Before I get into the absurdity of these lists, here they are :

Left Wing Right Wing
1. Joseph McCarthy 1. The Rosenbergs
2. Richard Nixon 2. Benedict Arnold
3. J. Edgar Hoover 3. Bill Clinton
3. Nathan Bedford Forrest 4. Jimmy Carter
3. Timothy McVeigh 4. Jesse Jackson
6. John Wilkes Booth 6. Noam Chomsky
6. Henry Kissinger 7. Alger Hiss
6. Benedict Arnold 8. John Wilkes Booth
9. George W. Bush 8. Hillary Clinton
9. Jefferson Davis 8. Lyndon Johnson
11. Andrew Jackson 8. Timothy McVeigh
12. George Wallace 12. Charles Manson
13. Ronald Reagan 12. Al Sharpton
14. Strom Thurmond 14. Aaron Burr
14. Charles Coughlin 14. Richard Nixon
14. Lee Harvey Oswald 16. Aldrich Ames
14. Richard Mellon Scaife 17. Robert Byrd
18. Robert McNamara 17. Lee Harvey Oswald
18. George Lincoln Rockwell     17. John Walker
20. Aldrich Ames 17. Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Now both lists eventually descend into partisan choices, but it’s pretty revealing how much sooner the right-wing list does than the left’s. I’m not saying the left’s list is perfect, but looking at the two lists side-by-side, it’s very clear which one I agree with. Rather than nitpick the lists to death (that’s what the comments section is for), the one thing I think worth mentioning is that for all their assurances that their racist past is behind them, the right-wing’s list has Jesse Jackson almost tied with Nathan Bedford Forrest, the founder of the Ku Klux Klan.

  1. I have to say I’m somewhat surprised that Abe Lincoln’s name didn’t make it into the Right WIng list.

  2. I don’t understand why they’d include Jimmy Carter. I understand that he wasn’t a great president or anything, but worse than Nixon?? It shows exactly how crazy the right can be that they’d list Hillary Clinton ahead of Timothy McVeigh and leave McCarthy, Hoover, Forrest, Davis, and Jackson off their lists completely.

  3. That’s a really good point. Carter was a shitty president, but there have been plenty of shitty presidents – what I can’t figure out is why the hell wingers hate Carter so much?

I suspect it’s because he publically criticized Dubya a while back, and as we know, criticising President Commodus is the next best thing to treason as far as they’re concerned.
