One of the big reasons that DC wasn't give representation was that people weren't supposed to ever live there.

I agree with Ross, move the Capital to the center of the country. Preferably a cool made up place, like Brazil's new capital, deep in the Amazon jungle, Brazilia. Except in our case I nominate the tiny town of Centropolis, Kansas, population, jack shit. As for D.C., just give it to Virginia. Or Rhode Island. Who cares, really?

I was horrified, absolutely horrified at the treatment of a great man given in that article, under your review of John Edwards. I find this kind of mischaracterization disgusting, and am shocked that you would stoop so low as to make such horrific personal accusations, and mindless attacks. Aquaman has never been limited to a mere hour above water, and I believe a retraction is in order. Now!!

You're absolutely correct of course, regarding southern succession. I just like the idea that at least in theory, the Capital is still a generally nuetral place. The corruption and avarice must still be imported.

seeing as how southern succession today unlikely, and if it was would probably be welcome anyway (kidding! kind of...), we should reverse this.

sweet honey in the rock have a very moving song on this very subject, btw.

I oppose DC statehood on the grounds that 50 is such a nice round number. Think about it, you guys! How rocking is our history to total out at an even 50 states? That's mathtastic. Let's all light cigars.

Washington DC is not a part of any state, nor is it a legally recognized national political power, because of reasons going back to the formation of the nation.

The Southern States, as was their habit, pretty much threatened to pull out of the new union anytime they felt that their rights and prestige were being threatened by the Northern States.

Obviously, the various compromises in the constitution are tribute to this. However, The original capital was Philadelphia. The southerners refused to accept that the nations financial centers and capital would be in the north, so they annexed some land between the North and South, and made the new capital there.

Anyway, it was a pragmatic decision to keep the states from bitching about where the capital was. I personally agree with this decision, and I don't want to see Washington turned into a state, or given representation in congress. Too much Washington insiderness goes on as it is in politics, and this would only exacerbate the problem.

I would however settle for a relocation of the capital to another location, a more central location, like say, the 4 corners. (joke)

but it should have voting representation in the house at least.

why not make it a part of md so they can vote for senate representation, too?

im not sold on dc statehood, but its more fair to the people there than the way it is now.

Al Sharpton's wanting statehood for D.C. seems to fit perfectly into his background and future prospects for becoming President. Why? Because of the density of minorities packed into D.C. Meanwhile, it really shouldn't be a state.
