Magis Silex Minor Fama

For all you out there who live in the L.A. area and love to rock out, there’s some great rock shows coming your way in the next few days worth checking out. The Mr. T Experience is touring in support of their new album (which is fantastic, by the way). You can get tourdates at Dr. Frank’s site. If you’ve never seen MTX perform live, you’re missing out. Not only is their music incredibly catchy, but Dr. Frank is one of my favorite lyricists ever. (For a great example of this, download the mp3 and read the lyrics for the song “Institutionalized Misogyny”).

Also this weekend, is a show by The Muffs. This Saturday’s show should be really great not only because they’ll be playing stuff from their upcoming album, but they’ve got two kickass opening acts. Visqueen, which is the new band from Fastbacks lead singer Kim Warnick, and The Checkers, a local Blondie-esque rock band who make frequent use of the design skills of our own Tom Neely. If you plan on going, get there early. This one will sell out fast.

  1. although im not too big on the muffs, if you are even considering going to that show you should if nothing else to check out that venue. spaceland is my favorite of the all too hip silverlake scene. you never have to wait for a drink in that smoking fish tank thing at the top of the stairs. there is always some obscure celebrity there, and the acts they get are the best in la. i’ve seen the negro problem, gush, concrete blonde… anyway, if you want to see a really cool band there go betty go is playing there on monday.

  2. while we’re plugging shows…

Feb 6th at the 1160 Bar and Lounge (at the ramada inn) will be the record release party for the 4th Teenacide album: Teenacide Pajama Party!

we just dropped off the album at the printers, it’s gonna be a good one- a compilation of girly-pop/punk bands from L.A. including the checkers, the neptunas, the holograms, etc. etc…

and it’s all packaged with lots of pictures of cute rock-girls having a slumber party- and designed by me.

  4. Yeah, while we’re plugging shows, let’s point out that L.A’s legendary Shakes are playing:

Feb. 25th at the Bigfoot Lodge

March 6th at Club au Go Go

    March 14th at the Scene

The infamous Shakes keyboard player Dan Collins had virtually the SAME educational background as famed blogger Greg Saunders, including the top-notch Latin instruction of Booker T. Washington High School’s Ms. Huettner, so expect the same wry witticisms from the Shakes stage as you would find here.

More Shakes info (and Tom Neely posters) can be found, surprise surprise, at:
