Hey, Wanna Buy A Pancreas?

This is a little weird, but it’s a damn good start :

Wisconsin became the first state Friday to offer people a tax deduction for expenses incurred in donating an organ.

People who donate a liver, lung, pancreas, kidney, intestines or bone marrow can deduct up to $10,000 in expenses for such things as travel and lost wages.

“Living organ donors who give of themselves so generously should not have to suffer financial hardship as they recover from surgery and resume their lives,” Gov. Jim Doyle said in signing the law.

The United Network for Organ Sharing said it is the first such law in the nation.

More than 83,000 people are awaiting organ transplants in the United States.

While this is definitely a step in the right direction, I still think the best possible solution would be a preseumed consent law in which people would have to sign up to not be an organ donor. Hell, if somebody is so selfish that they’d rather have their organs decompose in a wooden box than save someone’s life, then they should be the ones having to jump through hoops.
