Let’s Not Overreact Here

Of all the plans I’ve heard about Bush exploiting 9/11 for his “re-”election, the shots of the twin towers in his commercials really aren’t that big a deal. Like it or not, 9/11 is going to be an issue in this campaign. As such, some imagery from the attacks is going to have to be part of that. It’s not like he used footage of the planes hitting the towers. I’d much rather cede this one to him in the hopes that he goes through with some of his more audacious plans (like possibly giving a speech from ground zero). We can really nail him on that.

Also, there’s a poll out today showing Ralph Nader getting 6% and shifting the race toward Bush. Of course the requisite “Nader can kiss my ass” comments apply here, but let’s be realistic. Does anyone really believe that Nader could get 6% if the election were held today? I really doubt he’d be able to muster the 1% necessary to get on the ballots in the first place.

Finally, can we please stop referring to Kerry and Bush as “Bonesmen”? Yeah, it’s kinda weird that they were both in the same college club, but the way people talk about the Skull & Bones Society, you’d think they were members of a Satanic mafia who are working together to destroy the world. They’re both members of a group of rich and powerful assholes who watch each others backs. The main thing that makes this different from every other group of rich/powerful assholes is that they’re more loyal and have some pseudo-Masonic crap thrown into the mix. Just because they screwed the same goat in college, doesn’t change the fact that Kerry would be a much, much better president than Bush. Let’s not forget that.

I’d have to ask the goat.

  2. There does seem to be a bit of over reaction to the commercial. I hope it doesn’t stop him from doing something really tasteless too. Just as the OKC bombing made Gov.Frank Keating, 9/11 is the best thing that ever happened to Dubya.I believe the Satanic mafia would be the Bush administration.

  3. this is indeed an overreation and one i find a bit disengenious at that.

where was the outrage from widows and city workers when bush was using 9/11 to push through the patriot act, tax cuts, and an illegal invasion of a country that had nothing to do with the event in question. from what i remember, a few spoke out, but their cries were few and far between and definitly not picked up on mainstream radar.

how’s this for a question- where were these firefighters and cops with their outrage as the whitehouse pushed through cuts in their overtime pay and benefits while at the same time invoking the memory of their fallen bretheren in explaining he was making our country safer?

and now their pissed over a commercial?!?

could somebody explain this to me, please?

as far as skull and bones, it’s a metaphor to me. two spoiled rich kids running for president again. yay! remember, just because kerry would be a much much better president than bush doesnt mean he won’t still run the country like an empire, trample our rights and screw the poor, albiet to a much lesser degree.

when we get bush out, the work REALLY begins…

  4. Pay attention, Josh and everyone. The firefights and the 9/11 widows have been bitching about Bush every day for years now.

No one listened until the ad aired. If anyone is overreacting, it is not Breitweiser, any of the other 9/11 widows and orphans, or any of the firemen – they have legitimate beefs and you can’t blame them that it takes a commercial like this to get the press to (finally) power up the microphone for them.

  5. that’s fine, and i’ll accept that. now the microphone is on. praise god! let’s hope they criticise more than just the commercial before the juice goes out…

  6. Actually, I don’t think this is the first protest from firemen over how Bush has screwed them over. If I were one of them, I wouldn’t want Bush to use me as a symbol of his campaign, either. And the widows and relatives of 9/11 victims have complained individually and collectively about lots of stuff the administration has pulled.

  7. Yeah, but I still think they’re overracting in this particular case. One of the problems people have had with Bush is that he and his advisors have figured out a way to use the left as a focus group of sorts.

What happens is that they leak an idea (ex. stonewalling the 9/11 commision). Then they see how loud the public’s reaction is. If the public freaks out too much, they drop it and then they get treated like they’re great leaders for not acting like assholes.

I guarantee that’s what’s happening with shit like holding the GOP convention in New York. We need to start biting our tongues and let them make their own mistakes.

  8. As for the Skull and Bones thing, you can’t blame the media for making that into a story. It’s totally fascinating that this small club from Yale produces so many presidents and presidential hopefuls, after first making them wear silly costumes and pull pranks and stuff. I mean, tell me this isn’t an interesting tidbit:

?Prescott Bush, George W’s grandfather, and a band of Bonesmen, robbed the grave of Geronimo, took the skull and some personal relics of the Apache Chief and brought them back to the tomb,? says Robbins. ?There is still a glass case, Bonesmen tell me, within the tomb that displays a skull that they all refer to as Geronimo.?

  9. Of course. I find the stuff fascinating myself. I was referring more to conspiracy theorist types who are blowing the whole thing out of proportion. I’ve seen comments in a few message boards and such along the lines of “Well, now that Kerry’s the nominee, it doesn’t matter who we vote for. Skull & Bones wins”. When it comes to secretive groups that want to take over the world, I’m more worried about the PNAC than a bunch of rich kids playing with a ouija board.

  10. Jeez, don’t you guys know anything? Go rent “the Skulls.” They assembled an entire cast of B-list TV actors to show us what happens behind the curtain….

Flag-draped remains are a step over the line, more general references and images are fair game. This is particularly annoying sice Bush clamped down on showing flag-draped coffins of soldiers from Iraq.
