Voting Problems in “The O.C.”
This is the kind of shit that happens when your elections are run by volunteers and you don’t have any way to recount the votes (via Calpundit) :
Poll workers struggling with a new electronic voting system in last week’s election gave thousands of Orange County voters the wrong ballots, according to a Times analysis of election records. In 21 precincts where the problem was most acute, there were more ballots cast than registered voters.Wide margins in most races seem likely to spare the county the need for a costly revote. But the problems, which county officials have blamed on insufficient training for poll workers, are a strong indication of the pitfalls facing officials as they try to bring new election technology online statewide.
“The principal of democracy is every vote should count. That’s why we need a better election system,” said Henry Brady, a political science professor at UC Berkeley and an expert on voting systems.
At polling places where the problem was most apparent because of turnouts exceeding 100%, an estimated 1,500 voters cast the wrong ballots, according to the Times’ analysis of official county election data. Tallies at an additional 55 polling places with turnouts more than double the county average of 37% suggest at least 5,500 voters had their ballots tabulated for the wrong precincts.
Problems occurred in races throughout the county ? including five out of six congressional races, four of five state senate contests, and five of the nine Assembly races that are decided in whole, or in part, by Orange County voters.
Look at the results for congress, state senate, and state assembly. Nearly all of them were decided by less than 7000 votes. Considering that this screwup was relatively minor compared to, say, the Florida voter purge of 2000, I doubt that this will change much.

The computerized voting is just complete crap. They should use optical scan voting, which works great, tabulates instantly, and is recountable.
Why use a computer for something you can do cheaper and easier in another way? The only reason besides blind computer worship is increased efficiency. So the question is, how much more efficient can voting get? Why involve a computer if you can do it cheaply and reliably in an easier way? WTF, dude?

as a voter of the oc, all i can report is what i saw, which was pretty smooth sailing.
however, this is in no way an endorsement of electronic voting.
i would like to point out that the oc register had a complete breakdown of the election in oc the next day and i noted with much concern 42.xx% of republicans voted and 38% or so of dems voted. and bush was running unnapposed.
note to dems: this will lose you the election to a greater degree than anything else by far. it is handing bush the whitehouse again to a much greater degree than e-voting, nader, and karl rove all put together.
