danimal, there are many, including gary trudeau i believe, that thought john kerry was using the anti-war movement to help his congressional aspirations.

i've also read, about 6 or seven months ago in slate that there were many in the anti-war movement agitated at this very fact and that someone so late in coming around just assumed such a prominant leadership role.

i wasnt there, so i don't know. and i'm not one to get agitated at people "becoming" anti war or liberal or whatever at any point. better late than never, i say. but please keep in mind that these "year in review" things are usually pretty shallow.

more important than when he came around and why to me is what hes all about now. like i said when greg posted a picture of kerry next to john lennon, just as i can see differences in many artists from 1972 to today, i'm sure kerry is in many ways too a different man.

i'm voting for him, but do i believe his personna is politicly motivated? hell yes! you don't get to the point of democratic presidential nominee without being! he's co-opted messages and styles from other candidates that were working. that's been admitted by almost all contributers right here. i'm not saying thats bad, necissarily, as its a pretty good winning strategy, but surley you can see he's a tad crafted, no?

I just was listening to an old 1971 "Year In Review" album to prepare for a radio show I'm doing, on which was a section about Vietnam Veterans, and lo and behold, John Kerry's voice came out of my speakers telling me why Nixon was unjust in prolonging the Vietnam War. At that time in his life, he was not yet a career politician, yet already he spoke with the same conviction and sense of moral indignation that he has now.

I don't believe his public persona is crafted or entirely politically motivated, and I believe this even more firmly every time I look to the earliest points in his career.

I admit I'm just being grumpy. I just really don't like Kerry and am disappointed that he's the nominee.

You don't think that Kerry was ideologically-motivated in his response to the request? Why not go ahead and ask that all the Bush tax cuts be repealed since he was wanting "sacrifice" and this measure had no chance of winning approval anyway? Some of that 87 million was going to go to give National Guardsmen health insurance and to relieve them of the cost of their meals while hospitalized. I'm not saying that it's not OK to be against the war, but I am suggesting that the way Kerry couched his criticism was entirely politically-motivated.

Great post Greg. I was mulling over my response to the "hypocrisy" comment, and you handled it perfectly.

It seems everything the Republicans and the White House are going to throw out there this year depends on being taken at face value and will not survive even the slightest scrutiny.

We all need to do our part to lift the corners of this thinly applied wallpaper, and then it will all start to fall apart on them.
