Wow, A Good Political Cartoonist
Y’know, I love political cartoons, but they’re rarely done right. Aside from the alternative political comics scene (Tom Tomorrow, Ted Rall, etc.), mainstream political cartoons tend to be full of cookie-cutter art, trite symbolism, and predictable jokes. That’s why I was so impressed when I discovered the work of Ann Telnaes. Since she won the Pulitzer in 2001, I’m guessing I’m the last person to figure out how great she is, nevertheless her art (which reminds of me of Al Hirschfeld) really stands out among the mediocre sea of crosshatched donkeys and elephants. Here’s a few recent strips that I enjoyed :

i feel like a schmuck that ididn’t know her work either. really good stuff. thanks for linking to it. her art is really nice… has a lot of 50s-early 60s influence- which i love.

The art reminds me of warner brothers cartoons, the early ones. Particularly the character postures.
The first two aren’t really poignant or funny, just obvious. That last one is a zinger though.

I don’t think the first one’s particularly obvious, as, when you listen to the way people talk about the pledge of allegiance, it quickly becomes clear that most of them don’t know that “under god” got slipped in during the Eisenhower administration as an additional fungoo to the Great Godless Communist Empire. Bearing that in mind, I think it’s a point aptly made.
