A VP Idea

Looks like Kerry is dragging his feet in the VP search :

Once Kerry settles on a short list of candidates, each will undergo intense scrutiny to try to prevent any surprises. The campaign has yet to determine what needs should be addressed in the selection, delaying the process even more.

“I don’t think they’ve clearly made up their minds about which direction to go,” said veteran consultant Steve Jarding.

Some of the caution stems from the fact that the decision is Kerry’s biggest since locking up the nomination.

Congressional and other Democrats have urged Kerry to move quickly. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters Friday that he should pick a vice presidential candidate by May 1.

But those most familiar with the campaign’s thinking see mid-May as the earliest potential date for an announcement, and few would be surprised if the decision doesn’t come until June.

“There’s pressure to do it early, but there’s pressure to do it right,” said Jarding.

I agree. Kerry shouldn’t be in any rush. If anything he should delay the decision as long as he can to build up some suspense.

One name that popped up in the article that I hadn’t heard before was Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Apparently she’s moderate enough to appeal to more conservative Democrats. While I don’t think playing to the right is a good idea, the mention of a woman made me think of who just might be the perfect choice.

Ann Richards

She’s tough, witty, and a Texan. Plus she’s not a female version of Joe Lieberman. I don’t know if she’d even want the job, but I would gladly vote for the woman who said “Poor George, he can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.”

  1. I love Ann Richards, but could you ever see her on a bill with John Kerry? Poor guy would seem like a wallflower in comparison, and he’s supposed to be the main event. Veeps never outshine the big kahuna.

  2. Ann Richards would be great! She is definitely motivated to kick some Bush ass. Plus, if she got elected VP that would set her up for a Presidental run in the future. Who wouldn’t want that?

  3. back in 2000 c-span was replaying past presidential debates, and i saw the geraldine ferraro vs ghw bush debate.

she kicked his ass. she smeared him so above and beyond the smearing regan gave mondale.

oh, well. just goes to show a strong woman beating the snot out of the incumbant vp doesnt amount to much if your candidate is weak.

you definitly shouldnt pick a candidate that outshines your pres nominee. if its a woman that overshadows your candidate i think the popular perception from a patriarichal society would be that your candidate is a total wuss.

my ultimate nightmare would be waking up to diane finestein as vp candidate. never happen as ca is till pretty secure, but its a scary thought.

ann richards is great. she went out with bill.

  4. Can you imagine a parallel universe ticket of Dean and Ann Richards? I am smiling just thinking about it. It would definitely be…agressive.
