Turn Up The Lights, Cue The Orchestra…

I’m with Ezra on this one, John Kerry’s new ads are really great. (You can watch them here) The use of the music and interviews in the spots is so effective, it almost feels like you’re watching a commercial for Band of Brothers. I’m glad these are the commercials they’re spending a boatload of money on :

Senator John Kerry is set to introduce a major television advertising push on Monday that will highlight his biography and service in Vietnam, which his advisers have always viewed as his strong suits, campaign aides said on Sunday.

The new effort comes as many Democrats have expressed concern that Mr. Kerry is not moving quickly enough to answer President Bush’s sustained advertising attack and has not done enough to convey an overarching message.

Republicans and Democrats who monitor advertising purchases said the Kerry campaign had committed to spend up to $27 million for more than three weeks. Mr. Kerry’s aides would not comment on the exact size of the buy, except to say it would most likely set records.

The new campaign will not only run in the 17 or 18 battleground states where both candidates’ ads have primarily been focused this year, but also in two states where Mr. Bush won comfortably in 2000: Louisiana and Colorado, people who monitor advertising purchases said.

Campaign aides and other Democrats have argued for weeks that while Mr. Bush’s heavy advertising barrage may have defined Mr. Kerry in a negative light for some voters, there is still plenty of time to change perceptions. The new campaign is to include two spots, aides said. They will tell his life story and lay out the major themes of his candidacy.

This couldn’t be happening at a better time either. I have a feeling this will really help Kerry’s “personality numbers” go up and (hopefully) get people as excited about supporting Kerry as they are about opposing Bush.

  1. They’re okay. You and Ezra had me expecting something really great.

In the second ad (‘Lifetime’) the announcement that he went to Yale seems a bit forced and perhaps boastful? The other ad mentions it in a conversational by-the-way manner. This one announces it as a major bullet point on his resume. I’m not sure how that plays. I think Kerry’s New England, blue-blood, elite bonifides are pretty entrenched. No need to spend a boatload advertising that, and I’m not sure it’s much benefit…

They do help humanize him and present an actual personality to his previously wooden performances and persona. It is also a good start to honing his message. I think a “lifetime of service” should have a bit more appeal than a “lifetime of privilege and opportunities to fuck-up with other peoples money until I was handpicked for a role in public service because of my name”

  2. Follow up:

My wife was watching Oprah and the “Lifetime” ad came on. Right away, I’ll say it’s more impressive on television than on a computer.

My wife’s unsolicited comment right when it ended, “That’s a great ad.” She then added, “He still won’t win, but that’s areally good ad, much better than Bush’s. But he’s just as dull as Gore.”

After a pause, she then added further, “But I guess Gore actually did win. Doesn’t that just kill you? Why does nobody remember that…” It all went downhill from there…

  3. John Kerry has as much personality as Charlie McCarthy.

He will put the sleeping pills companies out of business,
