Marty McFly Is Spinning In His Grave…
Please please please, don’t let “Johnny B Goode” be the Kerry/Edwards campaign theme. I like Chuck Berry, but there are few things less inspiring than the sight of a bunch of baby boomers cheering while the words “GO JOHNNY GO” are flashed on a giant screen. Both of them are named “John”…we get it.

Hey, it could be worse. It could be…er…
…Okay, offhand, I can’t think of anything worse, but I assure you such things do exist! Probably.

I’ll take that song over that ridiculous “cover” of “Proud Mary” with the embarassingly altered lyrics any day.

Some songs belong in a “protected” category, and both Ike & Tina’s and of course Creedence’s versions of “Proud Mary” should never be appropriated, re-worded, etc. Performed live by the artists would be okay…
But, what song could they use instead?
“John Barlecorn Must Die”? “John, I’m Only Dancing”?

Would you rather have “Don’t Stop Thinkin’ About Tomorrow?”

There’s plenty of stupid songs that could be chosen, but there’s no chance that Kerry would “OK” a song that refers to him as “Johnny”. Not happening.
Perhaps a self-composed riff from his bass guitar, with a nod to Cliff Burton?

I actually would much rather have “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” as the campaign theme, it worked quite well for Bill. And if you think that that is bead, then perhaps you don’t remember Reagan trying to use the Anti-war “Born in the USA” back in ‘84. Springsteen told him to shove it, but it just shows how stupid the Repubs are since they had no clue what the song was about. Personally, I’d go with another tune from the boss “Glory Days” or, if you really want to spark some controversy, you could always use Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time”. You know of course that the Repubs will be using “Rocketman” to bolster their attack with the new pictures….then the Kerry camp could produce the pictures of Bush along with the song, “If I Only had a Brain”. People who live in glass houses….

It can get significantly worse that Kerry and Edwards using “Johnny B. Goode”. In fact, it has been a LOT worse in the past. Bob Dole altering “Soul Man” into “Dole Man”?!? The most pathetic thing about Dole’s use of that song is that Sam and Dave specifically told Bob Dole’s campaign to stop using their song.
I think it’s just sad when the most baddass thing you do is alter “Soul Man” into “Dole Man”.
