“Fake, But Accurate”

It seems that the conservative blogosphere is still obsessed with what they’re calling “Memogate”. With a secretary coming forward to confirm that the documents are probably forgeries, but that their contents accurately reflect the thoughts of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, I think we can call this one a draw. Even if we conceede that the documents were fakes that in no way reflected the thoughts of their supposed author, every other piece of documentary and eyewitness evidence leans towards the same conclusion.

Here’s where things seem to stand :

  • Dan Rather and CBS are unethical bastards who used fake evidence and refused to own up to its inauthenticity. The right wing will use this as an example of liberal media bias and will waste the next few weeks demanding that Rather be fired.
  • George W. Bush was a pampered rich boy who was skipped to the front of the line so he could avoid going to Vietnam (a job that his opponent volunteered for). Once he took somebody else’s place in the National Guard, he disappeared for a while and failed to honor the commitment he made to his country during wartime.

At the end of the day, only one of these guys is running for office. Go ahead, conservatives, waste your breath shouting about the short-timer Dan Rather. We’ve got bigger fish (or should I say “chicken”) to fry.

    1. Maybe we should be asking each candidate what “proudly served” and AWOL means to them.
