A Little Something For Everyone

Did you know that in Mississippi and Virginia, Martin Luther King Jr. has to share his holiday with Confederate General Robert E. Lee. And they wonder why liberals are such elitists sometimes…

I wonder when they celebrate James Earl Ray Day?

  1. Every day is James Earl Ray day — you just have to get in touch with your inner James Earl Ray!

  2. A couple years ago there was some city that was going to honor James Earl Jones as part of their Martin Luther King Day celebrations of successful black people and their contributions to the black community. They made a plaque that said “Thank you, James Earl Ray, for Keeping the Dream Alive.”

    True story.

  3. Here in Virginia, it’s “Lee-Jackson Day” As in ol’ Stonewall Jackson. It’s the Friday before MLK Day.

  4. i went to school in VA, and i was under the impression that it was one “Lee-Jackson-King Day” and that no one saw how absolutely inane it is.

the friday before MLK is bad enough, though.

  5. Perhaps, instead of separate Earl/Oswald/Sirhan days, they can combine them all into one– like they do President’s Day.

    I’d call it “Patsies’ Day”.

  7. August,

That would be the delightful town of Lauderhill, Florida.

Fortunately, there is no formalized “James Earl Ray” day around here, but every time I see a “Christian” private school (Southern code for “We don’t want our children having to share their schools with darkies so we’re going to start our own school and make it religious to avoid paying taxes) I think that the founders and current occuapants of said school probably thank James Earl Ray every day under their breath as they drive past the underfunded and overcrowded public schools.

  8. FYI–

Until 2000, Lee-Jackson Day and MLK day were the same day in Virginia. I was angry about this myself, until I learned that Lee-Jackson day existed as a state holiday for decades prior to the federal government’s adoption of MLK day.
