The Other Side of the Coin

Man….the senate response by Pelosi and Reid sucked. I liked what they had to say, but they couldn’t have picked two less interesting people to deliver it. I’ll admit that I loved the “birth tax” line…

Too many of the President’s economic policies have left Americans and American companies struggling. And after we worked so hard to eliminate the deficit, his policies have added trillions to the debt – in effect, a ‘birth tax’ of $36,000 on every child that is born.

….I just wish I didn’t have to read about it on DailyKos.com to catch it. The way Reid mumbled that line, you’d almost think he was ashamed to have something clever to say.

And Pelosi….well…she looked like her head was about to explode the whole time. She just sat there wide-eyed, reading her speech off the teleprompter, and twitching like she had to go to the little girl’s room.

Are these really the best speakers the Democrats had to offer? Of course not. Just off the top of my head, I can think of at least a half-dozen people who would have done a better job :

  • Barack Obama - Yeah, he’s the new kid on the block, but his convention speech was amazing. Plus, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who better represents the future of the party.

  • Joe Biden - I can’t think of anyone who’s better at calling “bullshit”
  • John Kerry - Let the speech be a big “I told you so” moment in which he recalls the President’s election rhetoric and reminds people that not everyone is on board with this insane agenda.
  • Barbara Boxer - Ever since her grilling of Condi Rice, she’s got a spot on every conservative’s hit list. Why not throw her back in their faces?
  • Howard Dean - Turn the standard rebuttal speech into a coming out party for the next head of the DNC. If nothing else, his appearance alone would guarantee some extra headlines for a speech that barely merits a mention.
  • Bill Clinton – Hell yeah. Could you imagine the furor if the senate response was the last President saying things like “When we were in charge, we backed up our commitment to deficit reduction with actions.”
  • So please Nancy and Harry, next time you’ve got a big speech, don’t let your position of power get in the way of what’s best for the party. You both do a great job representing the party in D.C., but the rest of America thinks you’re boring.

    1. Fuck, if that’s your game, just go balls-out and get Michael Moore to do it. The foaming-at-the-mouth wingnuts would unwittingly give anything he says tons of free airtime by harping on it incessantly. Might even overshadow the SOTU itself.

      Maybe next year…

    2. And what was the deal with that “pre-buttal?” Could they have come up with a worse idea? I guess they could have yelled into a vacuum… wait, that’s exactly what they did.

I have to admit that I don’t see why everyone thinks of Obama as the future of the Democratic party. It would be nice if he were, but the praise seems a little premature. Though I have to admit that I do like his Bill Clinton “third way” approach to politics. I think that a Joe Biden/Barbara Boxer combo might have been effective rebuttal combo.

    3. Biden is a good choice for this role. God knows he loves to hear himself talk…

He drives me crazy with a lot of his antics, but he isn’t afraid to say the republicans are full of shit, and that’s what’s needed in these responses.

Countering an hour of straight-up lies and propaganda with ten minutes of counter-rhetoric does no good. Take apart the republican position point by point or don’t bother. A ten minute stump sppech cannot sway anybody who just got personally lied to by the President and the “analysis” for an hour and a half.

    4. If Obama is the future of the party, I think we’re right back in Clinton Third Way territory and that isn’t where I want to be. I swear that Clinton did more to destroy this party than any five Republicans ever did.
