Well, greg, I completely agree with both your diagnosis and your solution. Yes, of course it is employers (and politicians) who are the real source of the problem. But the American worker/illegal immigrant dynamic is exactly the same as the union worker/scab dynamic, and just as problematic. The resentment towards illegals may be misplaced, but it is perfectly understandable. Denying that illegal immigration hurts American workers, as many do, only makes it harder to re-direct American workers' anger to the proper targets.

What is Tom Ridge's new position at Home Depot, and is there any relation between that and the subject of this post?

How come no one ever notes that the guest wrker program is anti market force? In classical economic theory, if an employer can't fill a job he has to raise the wages to a level that the job becomes desirable. The guest worker program circumvents this process by importing labor from areas living in extreme poverty. Those of us living in the relative wealth of this country can not afford to work at the resulting wage levels, creating a surplus of people needing jobs that pay a living wage which forces those wages lower.
Another bonus for the CEO.

I've come to the conclusion that it's pointless to talk about immigration policy until we seal off the southern border. I know it will be terribly expensive and take a lot of manpower but that's the only way we can get any control over the situation. It would force the Mexicans to participate in some kind of organized system and it would dry up the endless stream of cheap labor the corporations are taking advantage of.

Another great reason to stop eating everything :

Why are 800,000 illegal aliens working in American fields and orchards? Because special interests have hijacked the system and made it easier to hire illegal aliens than to get a legal workforce. A million illegal aliens entering the United States each year flood the unskilled labor market and have depressed farm wages terribly. With readily available cheap foreign labor, agriculture lacks a market incentive to raise wages and improve benefits, much less to invest in innovation and mechanization.

---

In arguing for expanded agricultural guestworker programs, lobbyists for farmers often claim that fruit and vegetable production in the United States would be impossible without large and continuing infusions of foreign labor. For instance, the California Farm Bureau Federation has argued for a guestworker program by claiming that, "Without an adequate supply of workers to fill seasonal labor-intensive tasks such as harvesting, U.S. growers will become uncompetitive, and be forced to reduce production of labor-intensive crops."
It's not just meatpackers.
