Men like Edgar Ray Killen deserver to die.

But it does not follow as a consequence of that that we deserve to kill them.

I remain steadfast in my opposition to the death penalty, even though my gut reaction is to beat his brains in with a rock.

They should lynch him – that would be poetic justice.

Those 11 Republican Senators are just scared, since their uncles were probably doing much the same thing.

At least they eventually got him – just like getting Pinochet or Milosevic won’t do much to them personally, at least these folks will know that someday after they think everyone forgot, they’ll get caught.

Of course we should be ashamed, and I’d love to see the bastard fry. But let us remember that opposing the death penalty isn’t (for some people like me, anyway) about the fact that there are hideous people who have committed hideous crimes that deserve to die. It’s about the inability of our justice system to fairly determine who those people are – and who they aren’t.
