Shameless Plug, Talent Show Edition

Well, Greg’s out of town, so he’s powerless to stop my evil shameless plugging.

As some of you might know, every Friday night I host a radio show here in LA called Theme Party. We broadcast on Kill Radio from 9 PM to 11 PM PST, and we’re online so that you can listen from the comfort of your computer, whereever you happen to be. For more information, check out our Myspace Profile, which contains a fairly comprehensive description of what we do, what we’re about, and why each and every one of you should listen. To listen, you can follow the links, or just click here for the online player.

Tonight’s Theme, inspired by Kanye West, is Unpopular Opinions. For example, I happen to think (sorry Amanda) that The Clash, despite their talent, are supremely overrated, boring, and about as edgy as U2. Of course I know you’re just dying to know more, so listen tonight.

Word.

  1. I must add that the Rolling Stones are old, and Paul McCartney is unnaturally happy.

    as edgy as U2. ouch.

  2. No one else is stepping up to the plate, so may I start the controversial rapport you’re so clearly requesting by saying a hearty “fuck you?”
You know the Clash are a significant, ground-breaking band, even if you don’t like all their tunes (as I don’t). They took the sound of frantic nihilism (both the bored street-lethargy of the Ramones and the smash-all-fuck-all three-chord anarchism of the Pistols) and pushed it in the direction of positive musical and social change. And as far as “edgy,” they were a 2-minute song band when 12 minute prog rock was the rage, but as soon as they’d helped change the sonic landscape, they dared to break from the mold they helped create, expanding both their repertoire and their fanbase at a time when punk was becoming increasingly codified and stultified–and even then, they didn’t lose their credibility or integrity.
And yes, they broke ground that some of your favorite bands rushed in to explore. Without them, would we even have English hip-hop, or the success of Eddy Grant, or an 80′s ska revival, or the Damned, or the Pogues, or a bazillion other bands that only thrived after the Clash and Sex Pistols had butchered the disco 70′s to death?
Anyway, history aside, I think the first two Clash albums are pretty fucking wonderful, and London Calling has tons of great songs. Sandinista may be the unravelling of it all, but that doesn’t mean that they didn’t continue to have great tunes right until the end. “Should I Stay or Should I Go,” “Guns of Brixton,” “Cheapskates,” “Spanish Bombs,” “English Civil War,” “I’m So Bored With the U.S.A.,” “Lost In the Supermarket,” “Rockin’ the Casbah,” “Radio Clash…” the list of great Clash songs is really extensive, and if you haven’t explored it, you suck.
