Fire and Brimstone

For those of you distraught over the confirmation of Chief Justice John Roberts, you’ll appreciate the headline / photo juxtaposition on the front page of today’s L.A. Times :

“Bush’s pick to head the Supreme Court was sworn in today. In other news, the gates of hell have opened up in Southern California.”

  1. Well you know, with the wingnuts declaring that New Orleans was being punished by God, you shouldn’t be surprised that He would target LA next…

  10. Absolutely appropriate to my feelings about the current administration, but hope it doesn’t turn out to have been the perfect front page for the Roberts confirmation. My mantra is now about Roberts throwing off his whole adulthood of having no morals, only endless mouth, being so humbled by the honor he fell into that he will begin thinking and acting like a true justice. DO NOT burst my bubble. I want my country back. I want my broken country fixed. I want the Nazis to slink back into the history books where they belong, NOT to be running my country. We DON’T have to do this. It can be better than this. Who’s got the courage, not just the opinions?

  11. As a newspaper editor, I have another comment about this - the layout sucks.

Despite the horizontal and vertical rules, this P1 does indeed make it look like the pic goes with the Roberts story.

Dogleg layout like that was supposed to have gone out the door 20 years ago. Without having to become McPaper-USA Today clones, a lot of the biggest dailies could learn either from smaller ones, or the top European dailies, about how to better design a newspaper for today.

  12. Ease up, everyone. How professional do you expect a small town paper to be?
