Is God A Murderer? Pat Robertson Thinks So
I really like the way the way the “Undoing A Miracle” post has prompted a discussion about religion. It’s nice to have a readership that is intelligent enough to read the questions I asked for what they were and not just assume I was making some sort of inane “Bad things happen, therefore god doesn’t exist” argument. Nevertheless, my inbox got one of the most wingnutty comments I’ve recieved in a while :
You know, I just read your tirade about the miners who were killed in West Virginia and have to say that even for a liberal you have reached a new low. Of all the vile disgusting crap I’ve ever seen in my life, using the deaths of these 12 men (and the grief of their poor families!) to further your agenda is as sick, as loathsome, and as downright nasty as anything ever done by your kind anywhere.When liberals openly rejoiced at the death of Ronald Regan, I knew what kind of filth we were dealing with. But this, men who have never done anything but WORK (an alien concept to “men” like you, obviously) in order to drive the engine of American energy, and then you GLOAT over their deaths to pursue your atheist, secular humanist, abortion rights/gay marriage/evolution agenda- man, you just are a sick mother, that’s all there is to say.
How you can live with yourself and keep such a black heart beating in your breast, to be such a vile speck as to use death and tragedy as a vehicle for your sick beliefs- my God, I have forwarded this to all of my contacts, and especially to media sites. The American public needs to see the true face of liberals, and man is it ugly.
I wish you would stand in the face of those families and tell them how their husbands, brother’s and son’s death disproved God. You are sick and evil, and that same God will see you burn in Hell.
All I can do is pray for you. For you truly are venal, evil and sick.
I’ll put my response to this jackass in the extended entry, but for now, the reader does have a point. You’d have to be an evil sonofabitch to exploit this tragedy to pursue your agenda (via TPM) :
The Rev. Pat Robertson said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is being punished by God for dividing the Land of Israel. Robertson, speaking on the “700 Club” on Thursday, suggested Sharon, who is currently in an induced coma, and former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, assassinated by an Israeli extremist in 1995, were being treated with enmity by God for dividing Israel. “He was dividing God’s land,” Robertson said. “And I would say, Woe unto any prime minister of Israel who takes a similar course to appease the E.U., the United Nations or the United States of America. God says, This land belongs to me. You better leave it alone.”
I hadn’t realized that god was an assassin who takes orders from televangelists. I’m sure prayer time at the Robertson household is a hoot :
“Dear Jesus, please kill the following people….”
So, you decided to click through to see how I responded to that dick who called me “venal, evil and sick” and said I “GLOAT over their deaths to pursue your atheist, secular humanist, abortion rights/gay marriage/evolution agenda”. Well, consider this the opposite of my “Killing With Kindness” post :
My “agenda”?? What the hell are you talking about? I didn’t mention abortion, gay marriage, or evolution and I certainly didn’t pose any questions in the hopes of promoting maligning religion or promoting secularity. The questions I posed were food for thought that most commenters have understood to be starting points for a civil religious discussion.If you paid closer attention to the words I used, you might have noticed that, despite my own atheism, the questions and comments are about the nature of god, not whether or not this tragedy disproves of the existence of god.
Additionally, how DARE you accuse me of gloating over the deaths of those twelve miners. I never uttered a single dismissive word about their deaths. In fact, if you actually read what I wrote, you’d notice that the post begins with “In the wake of the tragedy in West Virginia…” The deaths of those men was a horrible mistake and one that I don’t take lightly.
You can pretend that I’m a “venal, evil and sick” liberal, but don’t fucking accuse me of mocking or exploiting the deaths of those men. Every comment I made was aimed at the media’s reaction to those deaths, not the deaths themselves. If you’re too stupid to understand the difference, then do us both a favor and never read another word I write.
Sometimes you just gotta tell an asshole he’s an asshole. He hasn’t written me back, but if he does, I’ll be sure to include it in the comments.

The only bigger asshole than Pat Robertson is the “God” that resides in his head.

I hope those assholes are stupid enough to go picket the miner’s funerals. They will be stomped into the cold West Virginia dirt.
I think we know what the fuck is wrong with Kansas now. It’s on S.W. 12 th Street.

I was thinking about the guy who sent you that e-mail. And it really illustrates the kind of programming that some on the rabid right have undergone. All the years of caricature and labeling have really paid off. You see, now you don’t even have to have any of the specifics that you mention in your reply for him to perceive them in your original post. All you need is to have a general tone about it, and the scripts running in his brain fill the rest in.
It’s like just the name “Hillary Clinton” evokes this whole crazy-liberal thing, whereas the reality is that she’s really as middle-of-the-road career politician as you can get.
Same thing with the ACLU – say the word, it evokes a bunch of baby killing, anti-religious nutcases.
Another one is Michael Moore – who is not as “moonbat leftist” as people think. He’s actually quite reasonable, and, unlike Ann Coulter’s ilk, actually has facts behind his rhetoric.
They’ve been really well trained.

I hope they DO picket. I’d love to see what happens to them when the families of these men get a hold of them. I’m a pacifist, but for some reason, would really enjoying seeing anybody from the WBC get their ass kicked.

I had my own encounter with Fred Phelps and his family of hate-mongers a couple of years ago. You can see a photo from the protest here.

This reminds me of the time I wrote a column in college and got a call from my great uncle, who “had heard from some people” that I was advocating the mass murder of all World War II vets. Naturally, I wasn’t, but it was so funny to have people get all riled up about something they hadn’t read.
In your case, the guy obviously wasn’t reading the post, he was hoping to find a “liberal” who he could blame the deaths on.
Bravo, however, on writing him back. It will be a test of what kind of moron this guy is to see if he responds. Will he write back calling you gay or will he sheepishly “forget” to send another e-mail, instead bragging about how he “told off one of them liberal sons of bitches” as his local sports bar/church social.

Ah, you can always count on Pat Robertson and his supporters to be the calm voice of reason in any situation.
Seriously, though, what is the relation of how pissed off God is with you to the illness you get?
Headache = watch it, buster . . .
Hemmoroids = I’m warning you . . .
Cancer = You’ve done it now!

Here’s my favorite bit:
He left out the next line: “Creatures crawl in search of Blood, to terrorize y’all’s neighborhood.” But his recollection is otherwise pretty good.

Considering that the last high profile picketting I heard of theirs, Sean Hannity referred to as an act of liberal hatred of American troops, I sincerely doubt that the media attention to it would be appropriate.
As for this fellow, he obviously didn’t read what you wrote and will see and continue to see what he wants to see, which is you as an evil bastard, not because of anything you’ve done, but rather because you hold membership within a certain group. There is no reason or logic to it.

Let’s save time from now on and just list the people Pat Robertson doesn’t think should be assasinated.
