Greg:
Whenever I voted, I never registered any party affiliation. The workings of caucuses and conventions seem to me like the TV frosting on a cake made of cow poop. I long hated crowds, distrusted populism and mob psychology and marketing as a political skills. Slowly, under the accidental tutelage of liberal bloggers, my own ideas of how-to-prioritize and how-to-solve social economic and other shared ills of the world are merging with notions of how electorates are reached, re-educated and moved to vote. We certainly aren't in control of much more than our own voices at this point but that is no reason to still those voices.

I agree that substantial electoral reform is needed to enable new ideas in politics to enter the debate directly as new parties rather than waiting for an exhausted and failing member of the big two parties to pick up the idea...it is high time and badly needed reform, but as distant as vacations on the moon.

Would you cheer up a bit if I told you that I came to blogging as a total naif but through reading blogs like yours, I have sharpened my arguments, found my political allies, got my facts and priorties straight?
My point is that If Dem leadership is feckless and can't do what leaders must, i.e. change the mind of the crowd, then WE who are blogging against the corrupting nonsense are at least forming ourselves into a cadre that can preserve and strengthen a vision. WE will hone and hang on to pre-tested battle cries that will be ready when the leadership or a more energized candidate or two come around and squarely face their task.

As an older, financially comfortable, technology adapted blue state voter, I had always assumed I was a moderate. You don't know who you are until you start talking back. Blogs don't appear to reach the level of influencing whole political parties and they may never be corrupt enough to be effective at that but blogs ARE finding converts one reader at a time.

Most Democrats won't win any important elections until we address the FRAUD in ELECTRONIC voting. We have privitized our elections to corporations owned and run by neocons. Are we going to mobilize and take action?

Dear Greg,

Before you leave the party, please call your Democratic Senators to FILIBUSTER Alito. Also call Harry Reid, Dick Durbin and even Howard Dean.

Alito is not a "done deal". Momentum is building to stop this abomination of a nomination!

CALL FOR A FILIBUSTER OF ALITO
1-(800) 426-8073 ask for your Senator(s)

It¹s time to call your Senators and tell them they will represent YOU by FILIBUSTERING Alito. A NO vote is not enough.

There are 3 toll-free numbers to the DC switchboard. Ask for your Senator(s) and tell the aide who answers that you urge the Senator to FILIBUSTER Alito. You don¹t need to speak paragraphs; all you need to say is that you urge him/her to filibuster Alito.
 (888) 818-6641 or
 (888) 355-3588 or
 (800) 426-8073

You can also call your favorite progressive talk show. Say that Alito is not a “done deal” as the Republicans want us to believe and that everyone should call their Senators and urge a filibuster. Give out the toll-free numbers over the air. A list of progressive talk shows and their phone numbers is available at http://www.nocrony.com

If you want the animated cartoon version of what¹s at stake, go to:
http://www.markfiore.com/animation/greater.html

Together we can and must stop the far right¹s takeover of the Supreme Court!

Greg,

In case you haven't seen it, the lovely and talented Molly Ivins has something to say about this issue.

And in the spirit of shameless blogwhoring, I blogged about it here.

Greg, you're not stopping blogging, are you?! I think you're just saying that you'll no longer be an apologist for the mainstream democrats... And I, for one, am glad to see you take that stance. For too long, we've all been just supporting whatever lame-ass democratic candidate they give us because we see that as the only way to get them back in power. And look where that's gotten us: nowhere!

The democrats can't/don't win any major elections anymore, and more people need to open their eyes and realize that just throwing all your support behind some candidate you don't really care about isn't going to change anything. We've already tried it, and it didn't work. We need to take them to task instead, look at them critically and not support them if they're retards simply because they're democrats.

And as for the "if we don't support the democratic candidate, then we're just handing the elections to the GOP" argument, well, you know what, the GOP is gonna win it anyways. We've already seen it.

I think we should show no mercy. Your next post, about Harry Reid, and your advice about what the democrats need to do to win elections, would have a lot more teeth if you're willing to follow through. Meaning, don't just complain about how worthless they are, and then continue to vote for them anyways. If the repubs are gonna win anyways, why not start holding the democrats to some kind of standard? And if they don't meet it, don't support them!

It brings me back to that old argument about why can't the average Joes in the red states see that the republican party isn't the party they think it is. Well, I think many of them do, but they still vote republican, because they're republicans. And it's a shame. But it's the same thing we're doing...

I don't see what you're saying as "quitting" at all! I see it more like upping the fight to the next level. I think it's far more admirable to fight for WHAT you really believe in, instead of fighting for some guy who claims to support what you really believe in but doesn't ever show it.

Keep up the good work, Greg!

But you are taking your words and going home. There is only one group that is helped by your departure. I understand you feel you are wasting time here, but I think your effort hasn't been wasted. I too am livid at the way the politicians are handling things but I don't have the skills to write and so no real blog with an audiance to abandon. I would no doubt feel like folding it up if I did. But I would be wrong just as you are.

I am sad to see you stop. I've learned alot from you and others who blog in the bleakness of todays political environment.

Quitter? Heh, I figured there would be at least 5-6 comments before somebody threw that word at me. I'm not giving up on liberal causes, I'm just giving up on the Democratic establishment that doesn't have the balls to actually win. I just did another post about the spinelessness of the beltway crowd here that has some specifics.

I'm tired of patting these guys on the back only to get disappointed later. I don't know what role blogs and bloggers can/should play in helping Democrats regain control of the government, but whatever role that is requires collaboration, not just trying to recruit us as a means to regurgitate talking points. I've been let down too many times at this point to play shill to a bunch of suits too cowardly to fight back against GOP corruption with the intelligence and intensity needed to win.

I'm hoping at some point to see something that changes my mind and convinces me that the Democrats are willing to fight fire with fire, but with the track record these guys have, I'm not holding my breath.

homer simpson said something interesting on this topic: "can't win? don't try!" so you and peter dauooua are not alone in your quitter attitudes. i mean, i certainly expect everything i write on my blog to be espoused by john kerry on cnn the next day. particularly the activities of my cats.
