A Public Service Announcement

I was hoping the world would figure this out for themselves, but apparently it needs to be said. Carlos Mencia is not funny. Stringing together stereotypes isn’t the same as telling a joke and punctuating your sentences by boasting “I said it!” isn’t the same as a punchline. Please stop watching his show.

  1. Word. I’ve been thinking exactly the same thing since show #1. I’ve occasionally flipped back over to his show to see if it’s gotten any better, but nope… still just unfunny crap presenting itself as a Latino substitute for Dave Chappelle. (As if.)

Somewhere on this earth there’s a blazingly brilliant hispanic comedian waiting for his moment. Carlos Mencia so ain’t him.

  2. I couldn’t agree more. Who the hell is watching this?

  3. The sad thing is, it seems like the popularity of Mencia’s show proves Chappelle right for quitting when he did. The audience of Mind of Mencia are like the horses in Young Frankenstein, they’ll rear up if they just hear something that sounds familiar.

Then again, we have Wonder Showzen on MTV2, The Venture Brothers, Tom Goes to the Mayor and Moral Orel on Cartoon Network, and Lucky Louis on HBO (coming in June). So let’s just pretend Mencia doesn’t exist.

  4. No kidding. I Netflixed one of Mencia’s stand up shows after seeing some clips that looked funny. It was just…ignorant.

  5. It’s the occasional kernel of haha interspersed among piles of “this is shit”.

    He sucks.

And he’s giving latino comedy a bad rap.

  6. Thank God, I thought it was just me.

And “woo” to the Venture Bros. “Woo,” I say.

  7. Agreed. Mencia sucks ass, and lots of it.

  8. I think Mencia does a great “yob!” Har har, git it? Mencia’s a genius.

  9. The thing I don’t like about Mencia’s brand of comedy is that it dares you to dislike it, then if you have even the most anodyne of criticisms, you’re obviously a prude who doesn’t “get it.” F&*k you! I don’t have to like anything!

It’s the same complaint I’ve had about “South Park” and “Drawn Together.” (Although at least Mencia & SP are funny most of the time, while DT is just trying WAY too damn hard to be shocking. Yes, I get it: you’re edgy! Ooo…)

  10. story goes that george lopez, upon watching carlos mencia’s act, mailed him a tape of lopez’s hbo special, which, of course, consisted of most of the jokes that mencia had stolen from lopez.

lopez also sent a cease & desist order with the tape.

i don’t know if it’s true. but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was.

also: wonder showzen is alternately horrifying and hilarious. i don’t know if i should hate myself for loving it or love myself for hating it.

which, i think, is the reaction they’re trying to achieve.

i also say “woo” to the venture bros.

  11. I wanted to catch the new Mencia they’re currently doing promos for. He asks if there are any Klingons in the audience, and a Klingon raises his hand and says, “I am a Klingon.” The Klingon’s delivery makes me laugh out loud. Since that’s probably the only funny moment in the whole show and I’ve already seen it, no need to watch.
