“Remember that time she transformed herself from a fashion-obsessed disco singer into a fashion-obsessed disco singer?”

The subject line for this post was taken from something I heard Jon Brion say at Largo once, but I think my favorite thing about Madonna is her humility (via Defamer) :

I know that being predictably “offensive” is her shtick, but this is just getting sad. Hasn’t she done the “appropriating religious symbols” thing already? If she wants to keep offending people, maybe she should rent some John Waters movies for inspiration. Pink Flamingos alone has enough offensiveness for Madonna to “reinvent” herself for another decade. Of course, that just assumes that you buy the whole “reinvention” act in the first place. Not that I’d ever listen to her music, but her whole persona reeks of the same bandwagon-jumping and press-manipulating that infuriates me about John McCain. Just because you were the first to capitalize on a trend doesn’t mean you deserve more props than the people whose ideas you’ve co-opted.

  1. That’s just what Michael Alig said about her.

  2. She was all about Spears until the front seat baby thing happened. What about her new makeover that was supposed to transform her into a kinder person with moral values? Was I just dreaming?

This woman needs to realize that her stardom ran out sometime in the early 90’s.

  3. Wait til that junkie comes down off that high… a friend of mine says the more religious the worse person they were beforehand. Sounds like she’s about ready to snap…

  4. How come she has only one leg in that picture? Did something happen to her? Maybe that is just a big crutch she is using. What is that thing sticking out of her head?

  5. What’s she gonna do to upstage herself in the next performance… use real nails? I’d support that.

  6. The funniest thing is that she’s so desperate to be relevant that she’s using a 2,000 year old schtick that’s been done so many times… it’s no longer relevant.

Being shocking isn’t shocking at all when it becomes expected of you. That’s when you have to fall back on real talent. Hence, she nails herself to the cross again.

  7. Madonna: From Ho to Ho-hum.

Who’ll play her on the Lifetime Channel movie?

  8. So sue me, but I laid out $350 for a ticket to see her in July. The cross thing makes me cringe - leave it to Marilyn Manson, please! - but then, I recall how offensive her electric-chair stage setup was to me in ‘04 (And I guess that’s straight from “Female Trouble”!!)

In the end, she did have a point with it. It wasn’t a terribly deep one, but it turned out not to be gratuitous shock, as out of her depth she may be from time to time (and probably is with this).

The current tour is all about dance music and giant disco balls. I’ll take it.
