Not to put too fine a point on it, but this Slackjawed Yokel act is, of course, the same game played by a certain coke-sniffing blueblood Yale legacy. ("Heh heh. Heh. Want some wood?") And even more importantly, the same Fake Cletus persona possesses nearly every GOP congresscreature who panders to the "pro-life" (and yet pro-war) Bible Belt Base.

(I say *nearly* every GOP congresscritter because there are a few of them who really are that fucking stupid.)

Since you mentioned David Cross, and I know how you feel about Arrested Development, I thought you would get a kick out of this story from CNN.com (sorry, not sure how to link). About Fox TV head Peter Ligouri and his search for new comedy shows:

"I think that something big is going to break out of the comedy genre very soon because we've been in a down cycle in comedy for so long," Liguori says. "And I think there's a feeling that politically and socially things are starting to get stirred up a bit" after a long period of post-September 11 uncertainty.

"We are encouraging the creative community to specifically, passionately and fervently express their points of view," he says. "We want them to play out in a comedy forum some of these new wrinkles we're seeing in our culture."

It really makes you wonder if anyone at Fox ever actually WATCHED Arrested Development.
