Before the end of World War II the closest they came to self rule was the Persian Empire. And in a similar vain, I think we are still seeing instability that came from the fall of the Ottomon Empire. When the Ottomon Empire began to collapse, it left an independent and unstable Balkan region, whose instability was one of the major causes of the first World War, and didn't really stabilize until the mid-1990's. My solution is to get the fuck out of there and let it sort itself out, since all we really can do is stir hatred. But that's not going to happen.
