These rumors were aided and abetted by no less than the chief of the NOPD and spokespersons for the nowhere-to-be-found mayor. For a blunt and accurate dissection of what really happened, read Deluge by Douglas Brinkley. Also see the contributions on the Huffington Post by Harry Shearer, who is very adept at discerning fact from fiction. While I think it's appropriate to focus on the fact that certain minorities are disproportionately poorer than, say, white men, the problem still all comes down to "it sucks to be poor in America".
