The Face of Stem-Cell Research
This hurts to watch.
If Republicans didn’t care about stem cell research after the Gipper’s wife and son begged them to support it, they certainly aren’t going to care now. It would be nice if they were as concerned about saving the lives of human beings as they are about saving frozen embryos, but that’s the way things go with the GOP. They’re obsessed with protecting “life”, but curiously only define the term in abstract ways that benefit them politically. Gosh, it must be nice to take the moral high-ground all the time.

The most rabid “pro-life” Republicans only seem interested in protecting life for those first nine months; once you’re out in the open air, you’re on your own.

Chronic debilitating diseases are not pretty to watch and very difficult for families to deal with when patients are no longer able to care for themselves. Not only do we need stem cell research but more help for patients to stay in their homes instead of being put in nursing homes. Having been in many of them I can tell you it is a cruel ending for people who have led productive lives and deserve a better ending.

If the average American was not so scientifically ignorant (they think that the embryos used in stem cell research are like fetuses - rather than the microscopic clumps of cells that they are), and mathematically ignorant, for that matter, the Republicans wouldn’t be able to pull off any of this shit.

In a way, Gipper’s Alzheimer’s was a blessing in disguise…his family probably wouldn’t have given a damn about stem-cell research if they hadn’t been so personally affected by a lack of it.
