Wolves In Wolves’ Clothing

One thing about realignment elections like the one we had last week is that the “moderates” in the loser party start looking even better to the mainstream. The religious lunatics aren’t likely to be running the GOP asylum for much longer. After all, if their homophobic GOTV strategy didn’t stop the Democratic landslide, we probably can’t write off the Giuliani campaign as doomed to fail in the primary as we once could. McCain’s a phony and Rudy’s a douche, but they’re both working overtime to stick a shiv in the back of the GOP leadership for which they’ve spent their careers being the moderate front-men. As Atrios notes, the media is in love with their carefully manufactured personas and will happily reinforce any “maverick” posturing they use to market themselves. If we don’t take their 2008 campaigns seriously, Rudy & John could benefit from the anti-GOP backlash as much as Dems.

  1. Wolves in Wolves’ clothing. Not the best NOFX album, but it definitely has some gems. I disagree. I think they’re going to go off the cliff next time around. We shall see, but it’s not comforting that Mel Martinez (”this Terri Schiavo thing should play great with the base…No, I didn’t say that. Must’ve been a staffer of some kind…”) is going to head the RNC. Mike Pence may well lose the house republican leadership race, but if he wins, that means the lunatics will be firmly in charge of the asylum, Mr. Saunders.

  2. After reading Rudy baby’s little speech I was amazed at how much he does not get it. Didn’t the voters just tell us that they reject Bush policy? So I am not sure how Rudy expects to get any points for getting a brown nose from kissing Bush’s ass when a whole host of republicans are distancing themselves from Bush as fast as their fat little legs can pump since their perception is that Bush lost the majority in congress for them which I believe is true.

I admit I have not paid much attention to baby Rudy though I have watched Mr. Phony Baloney McCain and anyone who believes McCain is a maverick has been asleep at the wheel. McCain’s mouth flaps but on the important issues he screws us every time. McCain’s support of the Iraq invasion is a real loser but two years is a long time and who knows what will transpire between now and then.

I would guess that as the corporate funds are now flowing to the democrats as the republican platform sinks that the republicans, ever desperate for their slice of corporate bribery, would be looking for a moderate candidate in 2008. Trouble is, I don’t think there really is such a thing as a moderate republican so perhaps this is where McCain has the advantage since the media has done a bang up job of portraying him as a moderate, and as we know in politics appearances are so important.

  3. I think the GOP has painted itself into a corner 2008-wise. They know they can’t nominate a hardcore Rightie like Mormon Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich and if they go with Rudy the social conservatives will sit home or start their own crackpot party. I guess that leaves McCain, and I don’t know if he’s really what Republicans want.

  4. From an AP story today about the election of Harry Reid as Senate Majority leader:

Former Republican Majority Leader Trent Lott, meanwhile, opened a bid to return to the Senate’s Republican leadership after being ousted in 2002 for remarks interpreted as endorsing segregationist policies of the 1940s.

“Yes, I am,” the Mississippian said Tuesday when asked if he was challenging Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander to become minority whip in the newly elected Democratic-majority Congress next year. . .

Lott is supported in his comeback bid by Arizona Sen. John McCain.

    A “maverick” apartheid supporter.
