I don’t think this is some sign of latent racism on her part, but further proof that she’ll say just about anything to get elected.

Actually, it just seems to be further proof that she has difficulty speaking off the cuff on the campaign trail. Her husband was excellent at it, as was Reagan (and so far, it seems that Obama is as well). Neither of the Bushes (Elder or Lesser) were very good at it, but one had the benefit of incumbency and the other the benefit of thugs who could keep anyone asking challenging questions away from him - Clinton has neither (no matter how much Mark Penn wanted to run her as an incumbent - and that'll go down as the dumbest tactical move of the campaign season, I suspect). So when she tries she has a tendency to look foolish (remember the "lobbyists are people too" quote last year? Same thing, just without the racial overtones).

Given the lousy place she's led her campaign to, and her own stupid votes on the big issues of the day, this is all she's left with - talking about "false hope" and her own "experience". Her policy positions don't differ substantially from Obama's except on foreign policy - which doesn't help her in the Dem primaries given how they differ. Since she can't play up the differences in stances, and since the experience thing isn't working, she's left with superficial attacks. I expect it will get somewhat uglier in the next few months unless New Hampshire is a double-digit blow-out for Obama. Then the establishment may start putting pressure on her to bow out gracefully, or at least tone it down, lest she give the GOP too much ammo to use against Obama in the general later...

I think Hillary implied that it took a president to give the Civil Rights Act the push that it needed to become law. The way she said it was ambiguous.

Like Nixon, she needs to be perfectly clear.
