From the idiots who confuse Obama and Osama….

This is funny. In a story about Hillary Clinton challenging Barack Obama to a “Lincoln/Douglas style debate”, the geniuses at Fox News accidentally used a photo of Frederick Douglas :

Maybe if Obama challenges Clinton to a Burr-Hamilton style duel, they can use this photo :

  4. What? Raymond Burr debated Hamilton?
    Wasn’t Hamilton Burger the prosecutor?
I’m confused. Let’s just get back to Abby Lincoln.

  5. Oh dear. This sort of nonsense matters. It’s the only way a lot of people find out about history. It’s fine to mock it, obviously, and taking the premise to ridiculous extremes is fair enough, but one needs to exercise caution when making assumptions about what people do know about. I guess it’s less bad on the web, as there’s Google, but it’s best to include links (as Greg does),
The other thing is to avoid repeating distortions verbatim. Always state the actual facts. Fox getting Obama’s name wrong is a good example. Call it that, don’t re-enforce the association.

Yeah, but…that’s what wins elections (unfortunately).

Not accidently. They did it because they are stupid and ignorant.

  8. That’s no mistake. The republicans are busy focus-gouping racist attack ads against Obama, this is just a little priming shot that Osama is black.

I mean, c’mon. They’re reading everything off a teleprompter. Yet their “unintentional” goofs are always favoring the republicans? These mistakes are no more inadvertant than Bush jr. is a cowboy.

Excuse me. When I said “distortion” that was a misleading understatement. We need to avoid repeating outright damnable lies. And you don’t *need* those to win elections. Exaggeration and neglect of difficult issues, sure.

  10. John McCain actually debated Aaron Burr in person.
