Consulting The Experts
Hey Mom, former OB-GYN, can you take a look at this post and chime in with what you think in the comments? It makes a pretty compelling case that Sarah Palin isn’t actually the mother of her fifth child, but I’ll defer to you on this one.

Very fishy. She really doesn’t look pregnant at all, her tummy was way flatter than her daughter’s. And if her water broke in Dallas, she should have gone directly to the hospital. She was incredibly irresponsible despite the cute comment. It’s not just that a matter of infection but having had 4 births already, the possibility of going into labor and having this baby pretty quickly (like on the plane) is high. It is very common for the baby of a frequent breeder to sort of float around instead of settling into the pelvis, thus increasing the likelihood of prolapsed cord. Pregnant women tend to get a little bustier so it would be interesting to see some earlier pictures of the daughter. If we could only get hold of some DNA we could blow his wide open. The statistics for Down’s Syndrome are interesting but don’t really give us any good information. Is the birth certificate a matter of public record? Maybe just highlighting her poor judgement is enough. Risking her baby’s life doesn’t seem consistent with her a prolife position.

That seems a little like Frist diagnosing Terri Schiavo from several states away, don’t you think?
Comment by Chris O. — August 31, 2008 @ 9:35 pm
Uh, Chris, it’s utterly different. Persistent Vegetative States occur for a huge number of reasons and to much different degrees depending on the cause. Terry Schiavo for example, fell into her PVS based upon a previously untreated eating disorder. The lack of nutrient content flowing to her brain caused severe brain damage and a PVS. Others have strokes, head injuries, fat deposits, plaque build-up, etc. Trying to diagnose a PVS based on a videotape is like trying to study chaos theory by flipping a coin.
Pregnancy, however, occurs for one reason and pretty much has one symptom. There is a long, long history of very accurate medical knowledge related to pregnancy and its effects on bodies of various ages. In this instance its more like trying to see how a baseball game went down by reading the box score: if you know how to do it, a little information can tell you a lot.
In this instance it tells us that Bristol got it on, got it off and got knocked up. And rather than either abort of let her daughter deal with this in public, Palin would rather have her daughter live with a breathing, retarded (literally, not to be mean) reminder of how sex is bad.
This woman is awful.

…and all this came out the day after McCain’s selection of Palin as his running mate. Remarkable, ain’t it?
At this point, it smells like a sequel to that infamous National Guard memo.
Before running with it, fact-check the hell out of it. Caveat emptor.

Maybe she’s just good at hiding her pregnancy. Like hiding evidence of evolution or hiding evidence of global warming. This doesn’t matter unless it can be independently confirmed which ain’t going to happen in the main stream neo-con press. I am more amazed by the sound bite that she took on big oil. How? The only thing I can find is a state tax increase on oil in Alaska which I suspect will be more than paid back by her support of giving away all the mineral rights in the Alaska wildlife preserves to those same oil companies.
Say hello to the stepford candidate America.

Well, the campaign dispelled the rumor that Bristol was pregnant by announcing Bristol is pregnant.

See, abstinence only sex education did work. Bristol wasn’t pregnant before she was pregnant. Everyone should have a giggle if they are so inclined and look for the governor’s real weakness, her relationship to big oil, her adherence to faith based education, her willingness to tax big oil on the state level while opposing Obama’s similar plan to do so on the national level and her recently disavowed support of the Bridge to Nowhere. Actually they are still planning a bridge to nowhere, but now it’s for the country and not just Alaska.

I dunno Damien, looks pretty much like the Frist case to me. Including now being demonstrably proven wrong?
Comment by Chris O. — September 1, 2008 @ 5:05 pm
No Chris O. I don’t think my statements were at all akin to Frist’s since I didn’t attempt to make a diagnosis. The fact that you made the analogy demonstrates your ignorance of obstetrics. I do not think you can find an obstetrician or OB nurse who would not agree Sarah Palin was foolish in traveling back to Alaska to have her baby. I do think the truth is even more interesting as it relates to abstinence only education and it’s proven failure, statistically and anecdotally.

I was referring to the original question, not the part about being on an airplane while so many months pregnant — that is obviously a foolish thing to do.

Another thing worth noting in regards to the Frist analogy is that Bill Frist was a heart surgeon, which doesn’t make him qualified to diagnose a patient with a persistent vegetative state. In this instance, my mother has more than 20 years of OB-GYN experience, has delivered dozens of babies, and spent the bulk of her medical career working with pregnant women. Since I don’t have such expertise, I punted the question to her since the DKos diary in question seemed to my untrained eyes to raise some interesting questions that could be best judged by someone with expertise in this area.
As it turns out, the initial conclusion of the diary (which my mom didn’t endorse) turned out to be wrong, yet the evidence did indicate that Palin’s daughter was pregnant. That explains the baby bump in the photos, but I still think the fact that Palin would risk her health and the health of her baby by jumping onto an airplane when her water broke is needlessly dangerous. Not “let’s keep talking about this until November” troublesome, but definitely odd.
As an aside, am I the only one who thought it was odd that Palin’s announcement that her 17-year-old daughter was pregnant included an assurance that she and the father were going to get married? It bad enough that the kid got knocked up, much less that she’s now going to rush into marriage while she’s still in high school. I’m thinking she should probably stick to making one hasty, life-changing mistake at a time.
Having spent more time than necessary discussing all this, I think we can all agree that the baby weirdness in the Palin family doesn’t even make the top 10 list of reasons why John McCain choosing her was a major mistake.

DKOS removed article?
Comment by Anacreon — September 2, 2008 @ 2:53 pm
don’t know about DKOS, but the gop removed the vice presidential poll after Biden beat Palin 93% to 7%.
I should have copied that page….
