The Universe Wants To Kill You

It’s amazing to me that there are otherwise intelligent people who believe the scientific “theory” (really, hypothesis) that Earth was created by an intelligent, benevolent designer.

Sir David Attenborough has revealed that he receives hate mail from viewers for failing to credit God in his documentaries. In an interview with this week’s Radio Times about his latest documentary, on Charles Darwin and natural selection, the broadcaster said: “They tell me to burn in hell and good riddance.”

Telling the magazine that he was asked why he did not give “credit” to God, Attenborough added: “They always mean beautiful things like hummingbirds. I always reply by saying that I think of a little child in east Africa with a worm burrowing through his eyeball. The worm cannot live in any other way, except by burrowing through eyeballs. I find that hard to reconcile with the notion of a divine and benevolent creator.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson has the ultimate takedown of the intelligent design argument here. (Warning, there’s a disturbing slide about 3:10 into the video).

  1. Well the worm has to eat, doesn’t it? That’s one of the problems of Creationism (and to a lesser extent, Intelligent Design), people automatically have this idea that humans are the center of the world/universe and that everything revolves around us. We play our part in the system, but nature and the circle of life won’t fall apart if humans vanished. They’d carry on without us.

And speaking as a Christian, our knowledge of God and ability to pay Him homage doesn’t excuse us from this. Earth moves on regardless of how we pray and worship (or Who to). God shaped and designed how all the species exist, and how many animals can you name that don’t rely on some other plant or animal species to survive? We’re all connected, God made it that way.
