Bush’s Cult Following

Here’s a first hand account of one of Bush’s loyalty oaths (via Josh Marshall) :

“I want you to stand, raise your right hands,” and recite “the Bush Pledge,” said Florida state Sen. Ken Pruitt. The assembled mass of about 2,000 in this Treasure Coast town about an hour north of West Palm Beach dutifully rose, arms aloft, and repeated after Pruitt: “I care about freedom and liberty. I care about my family. I care about my country. Because I care, I promise to work hard to re-elect, re-elect George W. Bush as president of the United States.”

I know the Bush-Cheney campaign occasionally requires the people who attend its events to sign loyalty oaths, but this was the first time I have ever seen an audience actually stand and utter one. Maybe they’ve replaced the written oath with a verbal one.

As the old joke goes, I’m sure it sounds better in its original German. Somebody out there has to have a video of this…

  1. Warning: Godwin’s Law Violation in Process!

  2. Or maybe it sounds better when the presidential candidate himself pledges allegiance, dollars and lives–to another country:

“We will never pressure Israel to compromise its security.

? We will never expect Israel to negotiate for peace without a credible partner.

? We will always work to provide the political and military and economic help for Israel?s fight against terror.

? We will restore American leadership in the Middle East because Israel?s security is bolstered when we lead and America is safer.”

Much as I dislike Bush, this, from Kerry’s website, doesn’t make me feel any better. Sorry to spoil the party.

  3. When they raised their right hands, was it with outstetched arms, in the direction of the leader?

  4. Yeah LKing, it’s almost like we treat Israel as our little brother.

Well, we do. Get used to it. It is true that Isreal is a bunch of zealots surrounded by zealots, but they have the bomb and they are a mostly democratic people who really did have a crappy run of it 60 or so years ago. Not to say Israel sets a positive example of how to be reasonable or peaceful, but who are we to judge? Sorry to spoil the party.
