Riding Fear To Victory
Kerry didn’t lose the race, Bush won it. While Kerry’s base was motivated by anger about the direction America is headed, Bush’s was motivated by fear of further terrorist attacks and the erosion of “traditional” values. Apparently fear beats anger.
Additionally, the Republicans had a brilliant GOTV strategy that people will be talking about for years to come. By placing anti-gay marriage amendments on the state ballots, the GOP was able to bring out their base in record numbers. Ohio’s anti-gay amendment is what swung the election.
And it’s not just gay marriage. The Ohio amendment also bans any legal arrangement that “intends to approximate marriage”. In other words, “No civil unions, faggot”. Moderate Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for supporting a party that’s willing to hurt gay people as a wedge issue. It’s fucking shameful.

Republican GOTV
One thing I’ve been puzzling over is how the Republicans managed to get their base to the polls in such numbers. It sure seemed, going in, that the Democrats had the superior Get-Out-The-Vote ground game. Greg at The Talent Show…

Moderate Republicans should be a lot of things, starting with being beaten like a rented mule.

Please Don’t Say The Gay Marriage Issue Won It For Bush
I’ve already heard from a couple of people trying to suggest that the “wedge issue” of same-sex marriage drove out the extreme religious right for Bush yesterday. A quick check of the numbers simply don’t bear it out.

How many states have balance budget amendments or similar constitutional strictures? Seems like that might be a good “talking point” for folks who don’t want to see the country go down the drain.
And if the so-called conservatives claim that liberals embracing a balanced budget is hypocracy, all I can say is, “moral values.”
