DeLay’s Messianic Complex
I’m sure you’re as sick as reading the DeLay/Jesus posts as I am of writing them, but this bit from an interview he gave to Time yesterday is too good to pass up :
TIME: Your smiling mug shot—what made you think of that and what do you think the consequence of that has been?DeLay: Oh, I don’t know. I said a little prayer. First of all, you only get one take. It’s a very humiliating thing, to be booked. And I said a little prayer before I actually did the fingerprint thing, and the picture. And my prayer was basically: “Let people see Christ through me. And let me smile.”
I guess Photoshopping DeLay’s mugshot onto Jesus was even more fitting than I thought, though if I really wanted to “let people see Christ through [him]”, I should have adjusted the opacity on the layer with his face.
Just to make things perfectly obvious (and since people rarely click on all the links), here’s the Bible verse that I linked to in my previous post with the words “the people most likely to pat themselves on the back for being Christians “ :
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
DeLay’s a hypocrite, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.

But which is the scarier possibility: that he’s a total hypocrite…or that he actually believes this?

He’s a crooked politician who sold out AMERICA for GOLF AND KINGDOM. Why would anyone even care what he believes. I for one only care about what he’s done. He’s a traitor to his constituency and THE AMERICAN TAXPAYER in general. He needs to spend a long time in prison.

Word.
IS no one going to commend jon for yesterday’s Daily Show polite take-down of McCain. That was the best interview in a while for McCain and the Maverick failed.

Agreed with everything, but one caveat. “see Jesus Christ through” is just evangelical baffelgab. Ideally, evangelicals want people to see Jesus “through” everything they do. What Delay is saying (dishonestly, no doubt) is that he wants to witness for Jesus by being persecuted; we are supposed to say to ourselvese, ‘lo, how the mighty art fallen…I better get right with God, because life is transient, love turns bitter,” et cetra. I had a Presbyterian Chem. teacher who pulled much the same thing when the class didn’t do well on exams. He suffered, but soldiered on.

Delay and all his ilk are little but Pharisees, and I say that with the highest hope that I offend not any true Pharisees which may be out there on the internets.

Now that one of the top guys at Homeland Security got busted trying to seduce a person he thought was a fourteen year old girl on the internet, we can put him up on a cross beside Delay. We still need one more. Three crosses on the hill….

How about Bush for that 3rd place. After all he is the antichrist and there will be a special place in hell for him.

Bush is more like a Herod….
Delay is more like the guard who poked Christ in the side with a spear to see if he was dead….
They are “not - like the hypocrites, (who) love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men” but rather like the moneychangers who judged the offerings of others as unfit that they could personally profit from the sale of “fitting” offerings.
